Public Library Card Policies for Children
Very curious to know... what are your library's policies for children/minors having a library card? At what age can they sign up, and how does your library handle privacy right issues with the books they check out?
Children can't sign up for a card here until they are in the 2nd grade and able to sign their name. As for privacy, at our library we can't reveal to a parent what their child has checked out because of a legal ruling to protect children in abusive situations. For example, if a child in an abusive situation were to check out a non-fiction book that discusses abuse and if we revealed to a calling parent (who happens to be the abuser) that such a book is in the child's possession, we don't want the child to be punished/abused further as a result of that revealed information.
